Casablanca - a slightly different English lesson
Improve your basic command of English through phrases from Casablanca, the best Hollywood movie of all time. Released in 1942, starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, it has 22 speaking parts, of which only 3 are by native English speakers. All other parts were performed by non-native English speakers – like you – speaking non-native English – like you. So go for it!
"Here's looking at you, kid." – "Schau mir in die Augen, Kleines."
"Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine." – "Von allen Spelunken in allen Städten der Welt kommt sie ausgerechnet in meine."
"We'll always have Paris." – "Uns bleibt immer noch Paris."
"Round up the usual suspects." – "Verhaften Sie die üblichen Verdächtigen."
"I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship." – "Ich glaube, dies ist der Beginn einer wunderbaren Freundschaft."
While watching major parts of the movie we will move from Acting Out Loud (Look that up!) to Working Out Loud (Look that up, too!). We will also discover that Elsa (Ingrid Bergman) never said "Play it again, Sam" to the poor piano player but "Play it once, Sam, for old times’ sake". And that you should say "That much?" rather than "Such much?" …
